Stand Alone Dental:
To be honest, I am not truly excited about any stand-alone dental plans I have seen. There are very few true insurance dental plans out there, and the ones that I have seen are too expensive for what you get. When I find other good ones, it will be added to our portfolio.
Discount Dental Plans (this is NOT insurance).
There are some DISCOUNT dental plans that give you good coverage and a great price—but there is a "catch." The catch is that you have to go to one of their network dentists. If you already have a dentist you like, chances are you will not find him or her in the network.
On the other hand, if you don't care what dentist you go to, then these discount plans can be a great value—provided you get a good plan. Please note that these "discount plans" are NOT insurance. You do not get money back from an insurance company. Instead, you pay the dentist directly, but get a huge discount.
While there are a ton of discount plans out there, the majority of them do not tell you the exact amount of your discount. Instead they give you a range or, an average, using wording such as "save up to 75%" on dental costs. (Notice the qualifier "up to". It could also mean you'll get a big, fat zero discount!)
I have found one company, however, that I do like because they actually publish a guaranteed discount schedule so you know exactly how much your bill will be! This plan is the Alpha Dental Plan from Beta Health headquartered in Denver, Colorado. For example, pay only $18 for cleanings and $11 for an exam; X-ray bitewings (set of 4) are FREE!
